NO- PVC is an international collaboration between multiple universities and industry, developing, producing and testing a nitric oxide-producing catalyst embedded in a plastic to prevent and disrupt bacterial biofilms.

Bacteria live extensively as biofilms, multicellular and multispecies microbial communities adhered to surfaces. Whether a bacterial biofilm is helpful or problematic largely depends on where it is found. Preventing biofilm formation and disrupting established biofilms has significant positive potential for industry and medicine.

I am part of the microbiology team based at Dr. Chris Marquis' lab at UNSW, testing the new material and assessing its ability to disrupt biofilms.
